Loreal Infallible Collection- Spring 2015

Despite the icy conditions and bitter cold I've been busy delving into the spring trends and testing some wonderful new products! Loreal has already released their spring 2015 collection which includes everything from polish, gloss, shadow and setting spray.

The Infallible line is designed for very long-wear, with formulas that last throughout the day and reduce the need for reapplication. The shade range includes all of your basic favorites to add a bright pop of color and a little warmth for the coming season.

The Infallible 2-Step Lip Color may be one of Loreal's longest lasting lip products to date, they are formulated to deliver an impressive 24 hours of wear! I would categorize the finish as lacquer, initially they apply shiny, bright and glossy with high intensity pigment but once dry they become completely matte and quite flat. The formula tends to settle into the texture of skin for one dimensional coverage which reminds me of liquid eye shadow. This type of finish may eventually become drying but thankfully the other side of the packaging contains a clear balm to deliver soothing moisture and a touch of shine.

Shades from left to right: Perpetual Apricot, Timeless Rose, Red Infallible, Never Ending Nutmeg)

To apply the lip color the directions instruct that you begin with the pigment and wait 30 seconds until it is dry and matte. I found that this step may actually take a few minutes and the more color you apply the longer the layers take to dry.

Next you apply the clear lip balm located on the other end of the tube, this step keeps your lips from feeling dry. If you apply the clear layer before the color dries it will tint the balm which you don’t want. You may also need to reapply the balm throughout the day for comfort.

The coverage is quite good with consistent application in just a few strokes and the color does last a very long time even through eating and drinking. I actually had difficulty removing the pigment with soap and water plus a few different makeup removers which barley faded it. Hopefully with longer wear the formula will loosen some because it clung to my skin for longer than necessary.

Wet Swatches

If you usually forget to reapply your lip products or you are looking for something you can put on without having to worry about it transferring, smudging or coming off all day then this may be the product for you. I love the shades but it would have been nice if the finish remained glossy and creamy and I don’t always have the patience for lengthy makeup removal at the end of the day. The lacquers are available in 14 ultra-rich shades and retail for $13.99 CAD each.

The Infallible 2-Step Nail Color is a sleek new hybrid gel-lacquer that delivers up to 12 days of color and shine for salon quality results without the need for UV machines.

They are available in 12 trendy shades ranging from deeper hues to light feminine colors and the formula is chip resistant. The shades I have are: 021 Always a Lady which is a deep burgundy and 008 Iconic Indigo which is a rich purple shimmer. The long tubes are also dual ended with your main color on one end and your tinted top coat on the other. The polish retails for $10.99 each.

The Infallible Pro-Spray & Set is an oil free makeup extender with a mild scent. To use you simply spray the micro-fine mist onto your face after makeup application for a fresh look that lasts all day.

The formula is lightweight and does not leave my face feeling stiff or uncomfortable. It also dries quite quickly with an undetectable finish that protects against factors like temperature and harsh light. The infusion of aloe helps sooth and hydrate without making skin appear oily or slick.

The nozzle distributes a lot of product that dispenses in a refreshing mist but you do have to push it all the way down when you spray or else you may get large droplets of liquid rather than a fine spritz. The spray is one of my favorite new products from this collection and it is great for special events and hot summer days! It retails for $16.99.

Sticking with the long-wear theme the 24 Hour Foundation and Pro Matte Finishing Powder also delivers great staying power for a flawless, shine-free finish. The micro-sponge technology absorbs oil and the formula is designed to meld rather than mask creating a natural, smooth surface.

The foundation I have is in the shade Caramel Beige (medium coverage, light texture), it applies silky smooth and light-weight. The formula blends well and dries very quickly with a resistant finish that does not transfer, wipe away or fade throughout the day.Because of its durability I like to apply it under my eyes to camouflage darkness, it works well under concealer for an extra layer of coverage and it does not crease. If you can find a color that works for you this foundation would be great for summer and probably hold up well in humidity, it is available in 12 shades and retails for $19.99.

The finishing powder lasts up to 16 hours and diminishes oil and shine, it is available in 9 shades and retails for $16.99.

For all you smokey eye shadow lovers the new Infallible Smokissime Powder Pen Eyeliner is fantastic! This is Loreal’s first eyeliner-eye shadow hybrid with a sponge tip applicator that blends the loose black pigment onto skin with no smudging or mess. You can apply the color to your lids and in the crease as well as under the eyes for a bold, sultry line. The shadow actually applies with a well blended, smokiness so you don’t have to do much work to achieve the effect and it lasts up to 14 hours!

There are 4 daring shades: Black, Brown Smoke, Taupe and Purple Smoke, they retail for $12.99 each.

Along with all the new products in the Infallible line there is also a new mascara- the Voluminous Butterfly Intenza has a double winged brush for super fanned out lashes. The fiber infused formula is designed to coat lashes with a veil of color for 9x the volume with no clumping, flaking or smudging.

All of the new products are now available in drugstores and mass-market retailers.

Real Techniques Road Show & Core Collection Review

A couple months ago I attended the Real Techniques Road Show in Downtown Toronto where I got to meet Sam and Nic Chapman, the founders of the beautiful Real Techniques makeup brushes that so many of us adore! The event took place in a cozy room at Joey’s Eaton Center where the brushes were displayed in all their plush, fluffy glory and the appetizers and champagne were flowing.

With their makeup impeccably done Samantha and Nicola, also knows as the Pixiwoo sisters were all smiles and totally in their element as they posed in front of the bright lights and cameras with fans. Despite being busy with the tour and prepping for IMATS Toronto, they took the time to hang out and answer all of our questions.

The best part of the event was learning how the women got started in the business and became so successful. The pair began dabbling in makeup at the tender age of 16 and in 2008 when YouTube was still new to many of us, they started filming makeup tutorials and quickly became online sensations! The sisters may have inherited some of their makeup skills from their talented aunt whose artistry graced the famous faces of Princess Dianna, Janet Jackson and David Bowe!

As their YouTube views soared into the millions they began working with Real Techniques to develop their own brushes which are now known for their soft bristles, affordability and great quality. Each brush takes a year and a half to complete and the brand is now one of the fastest growing in the U.S.

Since attending the event I have been testing out the Core Collection which includes: the 2-in-1 case + stand, detailer brush, pointed foundation brush, buffing brush and contour brush. If you aren't sure how to begin using the set Sam and Nic offer online tutorials and this collection is designed for “high definition results.”

The detailer brush is cut to effortlessly conceal problem areas and it is excellent for applying lip color from palettes or other liquid lip formulas. The stiff point and bristles can also be used to deposit eye shadow around the tear ducts for highlighting or definition under the lower lash line.

The Pointed foundation brush is designed to be used with liquid foundation and to customize coverage intensity. Although I do use flat tapered foundation brushes with BB or CC creams to pat product under my eyes, I prefer stippling brushes for full face application.

The buffing brush is ideal for full coverage application of powder and mineral foundation and it's smaller size also makes it suitable for applying blush.

The contour brush is one of my favorites! It delicately applies highlight and creates a sheer, soft-focus finish. The tapered shape is also great for lightly dabbing on setting powder in the contours of the face and around the nose.

The brushes in the Core Collection aren't as fluffy or as large compared to some of the other brushes in the line but they work well and get the job done! The set retails $23.99 and you can find it by clicking HERE.

Stippling on my foundation is my preferred method of applying my makeup because of the flawless finish I can achieve. Although I use the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge for BB creams and I do have more expensive brushes for buffing I always come back to my stippling brush.

The dual-fiber stippling brush creates a professional airbrushed finish. The fine, soft points of the bristles are excellent for getting into the grooves of the skin to distribute product efficiently. It also helps reduce the look of pores and smoothes uneven skin texture although I would have like it even more if the brush was larger and had more bristles. When I’m aiming for a radiant, complexion I take my time and stipple lightly, moving around my face in small sections which produces great results! The stippling brush retails for $9.99 and you can find it by clicking HERE.

The Setting brush is quite small and fluffy but it makes a great addition to your collection. I primarily use it for highlighting or dusting powder under my eyes and around my nose. It sets my makeup nicely and when used with my HD powders I can place product right where I need it which translates well in front of the camera. This brush retails for $8.00 and you can find it HERE.

I have a lot of makeup brushes but I use the Real Technique collection quite often. The brand makes brushes suitable for any and all tasks and the quality is great. I don’t normally have issues with shedding and the collections are affordable! They also hold up well through deep cleansing and daily use.

You can get these brushes at FarleyCo.Ca and select retailers.

Beauty Box Five January 2015

The New Year has just begun and before I had time to let the prospects of 2015 sink in the end of January is upon us and stores are prepping for Valentine’s Day! This month the Beauty Box Five theme is all about confronting the New Year wholeheartedly and being receptive to fresh possibilities.

Before I delve into the box let’s review how the service works. Beauty Box Five is a subscription service that starts at $12 for the monthly box, $30 for the quarterly subscription and $99 dollars for a year. In this box you will receive a mix of luxury items and common brands with products for: hair, skin and nails as well as fragrances and beauty accessories. The box contains 5 products and usually includes one or two full sized items. It is a great way to sample a variety of new brands.

Costal Scents Eye Shadow (Sample Size)
Coastal Scents is a brand I am very familiar with and the affordable, highly pigmented eye shadows have been some of my favorites! I have purchased a few palettes from this brand over the years and the stunning variety of color is a fabulous addition to any makeup collection.

These four shades are bright, fun and reminiscent of spring  although when you order from Coastal Scents they tend to include a small quad sample with your package for free! The single shadows start at just $1.95 and the pre-assembled palettes include an amazing array of colors and finishes. If you haven’t tried this brand I definitely recommend checking them out.

Softsoap Nutri Serums Nourishing Body Wash with Omega 3 & 6 (Sample Size)

This is another product I am quite familiar with; I have used the body washes and hand soaps from this brand many times. Softsoap is quite affordable and can even be found at the Dollar Store. This particular body wash is infused with softening serum pearls and vitamin E to help banish winter dryness and lock in moisture. This sample is quite small, similar to the travel sizes you can pick up at Walmart.

Garnier Fructis Daily Care Fortifying Shampoo (Sample Size)
This is another travel friendly sample from a brand I have used many times. I like the Garnier hair treatments, conditioners and deep conditioners but I don’t use their shampoos because I prefer sulfate free formulas that are more hydrating. I do however think the products in the line smell wonderful!

Ultraflesh the Gold Standard Mascara in Blackout (Sample Size)
This is the only brand in the box I am not familiar with, the mascara is formulated to create “ultimate thickening,” mega drama and length. I like brushes with stiff, spindly bristles like these because they usually grab lashes efficiently, separate well and comb the hairs upwards for a fanned out, wide-eye effect.

Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips (Full Size $9.99)
I have tried a variety of nail stickers with mixed results, some lasted a few days while others began lifting the first time I washed my hands. I haven’t tried the Salley Hansen brand yet but they are made to last up to 10 days and are adjustable to fit all nails with no drying time. In my experience these stickers take a while to line up, measure, cut and file but I’m willing to give these a try! I’m not sure about this red and black striped design but sometimes patterns that look odd or eccentric in the box end up look amazing on your nails!

City Line Talk Show Fashion Friday + Inglot Toronto

I have always been the type who loves seeing what goes on behind the scenes as much as I do sitting at home snug on my couch watching the action unfold on TV. I have been to a few TV shows including the Marylin Denis Show, Steven and Chris and most recently CityLine.

If you don’t live in Canada you may not be familiar with CityLine but it is a popular morning talk show taped in Toronto and hosted by Tracy Moore. The show features a variety of popular topics including: style, fashion, beauty, trends, cooking, interior designs and much more.

Photo from: Chatelain.Com

The gift bags from the show often include some great beauty products!

I have been to the show once before but last week was exciting because it was Fashion Friday which featured segments on replenishing your shoes from winter, Canadian fashion designers featuring Jeanne Becker, skincare products every woman should own and trendy dark lip colors.

If you haven’t been to the taping of a morning talk show there are a few things you should know.
1. Be prepared to get there early!
2. Try to look your best because chances are you will be on TV.
3. Have your morning coffee or a good breakfast because you will be required to keep the energy up and do a lot of clapping, woohoo-ing and ooh-ahhhs that are recorded for background audio.
4. For your presence and hard work as an honorary audience member there are usually fab gifts and giveaways!

I was feeling a bit zombie-like that morning so I turned down the chance to be in the segment featuring lip trends but maybe sometime in the future. We were given some great skincare products including the Palmers Skin Therapy Face Oil, The Palmers Swivel Stick for marks, blemishes and rough, dry skin and the Palmers Skin Therapy Body Oil which are all great for winter.

I've heard positive things about the face oil and it is formulated to lift, firm, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brighten dark spots with antioxidants, smooth, protect, plump, soften and rejuvenate. It is infused with vitamins and a blend of 10 nourishing oils: (sweet almond, sesame, coconut, macadamia, apricot, grapeseed, argan, rosehip, camelina and sunflower oil).

The oil is light-weight and just a few small drops hydrates all night! I prefer to apply it before bed because it does feels a bit noticeable at first but absorbs well with time and softens skin. The face oil retails for about $10-$13.

Since one of the themes was dark lip colors we also got the Smashbox Long-Wear Lip lacquer in the shade After Dark which is a deep blackberry hue that retails for $28.00. The Shopping channel gift card was also a nice bonus!

When treating the face many of us forget to extend our skincare routine to the neck and chest so the audience also received the Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-Aging Neck and Décolleté Firm and Repair Cream. The cream smells great and deeply moisturizes to protect against the signs of aging and environmental threats, it retails for $115.00.

After the show we took my mom out for her birthday and headed over to Inglot where they gave me a tour of their new Yonge and Dundas location. I have purchased from Inglot once on a trip to Dubai and with all the pretty new colors it is great to have them here.

Overall it was a good experience and a great weekend.

Hand Chemistry Hyaluronic Concentrate and Triple-Function Hydrator

Many of my recent posts have been dedicated to battling dry winter skin and I'm happy to report that I am winning the fight! Nothing spoils a beautiful manicure like dry, chapped skin so today I am featuring a couple of nourishing products to get your hands and body in tip top shape.

When the weather warms up and the gloves come off I want my hands looking soft, supple and moisturized and the Hand Chemistry Concentrate is made to do just that. Formulated with “extraordinarily” high amounts of hyaluronic acid suspended in a base of skin-enhancing red algae and tamarind, the concentrate helps improve hydration and texture.

If you don’t know what hyaluronic acid is don’t let the “acid” part scare you off. It is actually quite safe and one of the most popular ingredients right now in skincare and beauty for its ability to distribute and absorb thoroughly. It also hydrates more than most components by increasing the skin’s ability to retain water which is imperative for people with parched skin.

The concentrate comes in a larger bottle so that you can also use it on your entire body for optimal results. This product is designed to absorb quickly to provide long-lasting hydration while alleviating uncomfortable tightness.

Although the treatment has a gel consistency when I rub it onto my hands or body it feels similar to a light lotion. For a few minutes after application there is a slight residue but it seems to dissipate quickly for non-sticky coverage.

Although I like the nice light scent and extra protection from environmental elements, for me the moisturizing effects of the gel did not last as long as the creams and I needed to reapply it more frequently.  It is however great for those who prefer light-weight products to creams or heavy body butters. The concentrate retails for $30.00.

I have been using the Hand Chemistry creams for a few months now with great results and I even gifted them at Christmas! The Triple-Function Hyaluronic-Rich Hydrator comes in a convenient purse size and hydrates below and above the skin’s surface.

For those who frequently hand wash or for repeated exposure to harsh climates, dish soap and all the other drying ingredients you may encounter throughout the day this cream provides rich, instant relief.

The formula moisturizes with invisible glove-like protection for soft, supple hands and long-term results. With a skin quenching base of liquid mango butter, Brazilian Acai and nourishing oils this is a wonderfully thick, indulgent cream that takes care of dry, flaky skin and rough cuticles. It retails for $9.00.

You can find these and more great products online by clicking HERE or at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipsticks Review

Maybelline has many great products to choose from including cult favorites like the Baby Lips balms but if you love smooth, rich, gorgeously pigmented lipsticks then you need to try the creamy mattes! These beauties will make your pout pop with bold bursts of stunning color and the soft, ultra buttery texture is simply wonderful!

If I’m going to wear a matte lipstick, especially during the cooler months I look for formulas that deliver on vibrancy and hydration. Dry, chapped lips are not cute so Maybelline has infused three precious oils and honey into their ten gorgeous new shades for a comfortable, creamy formula with full coverage and bold color. Although the lipsticks don't provide a lot of moisture they are not as dry as many matte formulas and they don't chap my lips which makes them very wearable.

Siren in Scarlet 690

These lipsticks have the same sweet signature scent of the Color Sensational line and because of the velvety texture they are easy to apply consistently. The longevity is also very good and paired with my lip primer I can wear these for a few hours before having to touch-up or reapply.

Daringly Nude 655

Although the color range is a bit limited the shades are quite trendy and the collection includes some of the most popular hues such as: nude, spice, wine, blush, pink, coral/orange and red. When I wear these lipsticks they retain their matte finish without much feathering and they don’t become flaky with long-wear.

Craving Coral 685

Lust For Blush 665

I love that the colors are very buildable, one swipe delivers great saturation but a few swipes provides stunning, opaque pigment. Due to the oils in the formula the lipsticks are not completely dry which means you can purse your lips to redistribute the color without the uncomfortable tightness common to matte formulas.

These lipsticks are true mattes so you won't get much sheen and they don't produce shine. They also look best on smooth, exfoliated lips because the bold colors may accentuate roughness.

Swatches from left to right: Siren in Scarlet, Fain for Fuchsia, Craving Coral, Lust for Blush, Daringly Nude

Faint for Fuchsia 675

The quality and the amazing texture of these lipsticks are comparable to higher end brands and for a lipstick lover like me they have gained an honorary place in my purse! You can find them at drug stores and mass market retailers for $9.99CAD

Kiss Gel Fantasy Ready-To-Wear Nails Review & Giveaway!

On my hunt for an easy manicure and a splash of nail art without much effort I have reviewed a variety of press-on nails without very much luck. Most of them were too wide or too short for my long nail beds and no matter what size I tried they didn't work for me. Thankfully Kiss finally got it right with the new Gel Fantasy Ready-To-Wear nails. These sparkly beauties come in 8 trendy designs and most importantly they give you application options that work and last!

Sizing
The whole point of press-on nails is to achieve a beautiful manicure in as little time as possible but when you first remove all 24, ultra-shiny gel nails and spread them before you, don’t expect to breeze through application.

Initially it does take a bit of time to correctly match up the gel nails to your own but the great thing about these is that they are all numbered. Once you match up one hand you can quickly complete the other by looking for the exact same numbers and if you repurchase boxes in the same size you will always know which numbers fit your nails! This actually makes the entire process less taxing and much faster for future applications! The numbers are very small and difficult to see but they are located on the very tips of the nails.

The boxes I have contain medium length nails and they actually fit! Since this is the first set of nails to fit well and look natural and professional I was quite impressed. They are also available in a shorter length and are made to last up to one week regardless of which application method you use.

Application
When I tested other varieties of press-ons in the past I never thought the adhesiveness was adequate enough for long-wear. They usually popped off in less than an hour and after hand washing I would frequently lose a few! With the Gel Fantasy nails however there are stickers in the boxes which are also conveniently numbered to correspond with the sizes you are using plus there is nail glue! If you prefer to wear the nails for a shorter period of time the mega adhesive tabs are easier to remove. If you want longer wear out of the nails then opt for the glue.

My application tips:
In the directions it instructs you to apply glue to both your natural nails and the gel nails but in my experience this is too much and may cause pooling. I applied glue to the gel nail only and spread it evenly.

Make sure to have tissue ready to wipe away excess glue around the nails and use nail polish remover for any glue that gets onto your fingers. The glue binds very well to skin and can be difficult to remove so the sooner you wipe it off the better!

I personally like the glue method best because it only takes 5 seconds to adhere and it is very secure so I don't have to worry about them popping off.

Removing gel nail and glue
For removal the directions suggest soaking the nails in polish remover until soft and then wiping them off along with the glue. This didn't quite work the way it was described because regular polish remover did not make the nails soft enough to wipe away. Filing the surface and cutting them may break the gel seal and ease the process.

I soaked each nail in polish remover by dunking my fingertips into the solution. The nails don't soften much but the glue will start to break down so you can gently lift the nails off (make sure you don't rip them off). Most of the nails came off whole while others broke into pieces which I was able to pick off.

To dissolve the nails you need something stronger like the Kiss All or One Artificial Nail Remover which safety removes glue-on nails, tips, gel nails and wraps (with the exception of acrylics). To use you simply fill the soaker tub with the solution and submerge one hand at a time.

The container is lined with flexible plastic brushes which you can rub the nails against as they dissolve for quicker, more efficient removal and there is a separate hole for the thumb.

Although nail residue may build up in the solution after a few uses you can simply empty it out and replace it with regular nail polish remover or pure acetone which also removes artificial nails, glitter and gel polish. The Kiss Nail Remover retails for $11.99 at Walmart and Target.

Pure acetone can also be purchased at Walmart

After removal I clean my natural nails with more acetone on a cotton ball to remove any remnants of glue and I lightly buffed the surface. To finish I washed my hands thoroughly with soap and warm water to get rid of the chemicals and apply a natural oil and a rich cream to my cuticles, nails and fingers to combat the drying effect of the acetone.

The nails lasted 8 days before one of them finally popped off and I was not gentle or careful with them! The surface did not chip or scratch and they retained their shiny gel finish. After removal my nails appeared normal with no damage although I still left them bare to take a break from glue and polish.

Adhesive tab removal
If you use the tabs you only have to soak the edges of the nails in polish remover, wait one minute and peel them off from the sides. The kit also comes with a cuticle pusher and a little nail file.

Reusing the nails
If you want to try reusing the nails, I suggest using the tabs first and then go for the glue because once you soak them in acetone they become unusable. If you glue the nails on and one pops off you can re-glue it although you may not want to wear them for more than the recommended time.

I love the flashy designs! They are great for events and the glam black nails with silver sparkle just screams party time!

Overall these nails were a success! They fit, work well and look great which is all you can ask for with press-ons. They retail for $10.99 per box and you can find them at: Target, Walmart, London Drugs and Jean Coutu.
